The new norm: Sold out for hot tech products

Is this the new norm for hot high tech gizmos?

Apple’s iPhone 4, despite the issues, is hard to get. Expect a wait to get one.

The iPad is so popular it’s hard to know when a new one can be had.

And now Verizon’s new Droid X smartphone can’t be found in stock anywhere and is also on backorder.

Either 1) The popularity of these items caught their manufacturers by surprise… or,  2) Despite the economy tech buyers are spending like crazy …or, 3) The manufacturers are producing limited supplies of the products and creating the false impression that they are selling in larger numbers than they really are.

The cynical side of me thinks #3 is closer to the truth.

How about you?
