Telecom industry folks are starting to talk about an iPhone backlash starting to show itself in rapidly increasing sales for Android-based smartphones. Most recently, the industry has taken impressed note of the hot new Galaxy S from Samsung Mobile, which has racked up an impressive record of 1 million units shipped in a little over a month.
The Galaxy S still has a way to go before hitting the 1,7 iPhones sold by Apple in a single weekend this summer but it’s still a very strong showing.
“No question there is an anti-Apple, pro-Android movement afoot,” said Jack Gold, an analyst at J. Gold Associates. “It’s not just about price. It’s also about having an open alternative with much less dictatorial control of what the user can do with the device.”
Gold said he expects that sales of Android devices from all manufacturers will surpass Apple iPhone sales by 2011. Gartner analysts have said the same thing.
The device comes in several models and is available through multiple carriers – Sprirnt, AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile
