Social media continues to be the Internet’s driving force in 2012 but lately, a new service that combines the best of Facebook, Twitter and photo-sharing is making huge waves. It’s called pInterest.
pInterest likes to call itself an “online pinboard.” And while the concept is true, it is much, much more. The service is getting so much hype and growing so fast that some in the tech press have predicted its one-click way to share visual content with everyone online will eventually make it the new Facebook.
Here’s how it works: You “pin” your favorite image or media on your own pInterest board, organized in categories that you set. You can comment about it, are then followed by friends, who can the “re-pin” your pins. You get the idea.
It’s called “pinboarding.” Bookmarking things of interest. Interacting with others. I warn you, once you start, it can be very addicting.. and a fun… but major time-waster.
The mission statement of pInterest is to connect everyone in the world through shared taste and the “things” they find interesting. Although it’s been around for more than a year, it has just recently taken off, from about 1.2 million last summer to over 4 million today.
But who those 4 million are is one of the most interesting parts of the story.
The stats show 58% of pInterest’s users are women users, nearly 60% between the ages of 25 and 44. pInterest is capitalizing on a market which no other social media site has. In contrast, women make up just over 48% of users on Facebook. This is pretty significant and has a lot of people looking at gender-specific influence as a major social media trend

Thanks for the info. I’d never heard of pinboarding before, so I’m going to check it out.
Asked for an invite, responded with notice I was on a waiting list. That won’t have them passing up facebook anytime soon.
