The holiday shopping season is now officially underway and as we does each year, starting this week and through Christmas, I’ll be offering some cool gadget gift ideas sure to appeal to those who like technology. This week, we look at two cameras that go far beyond the normal.
The first is a little HD camera that comes with its own drone.
Seriously.
It’s built into the AR Drone, a flying quadricopter that takes full HD video. You can fly it over 100 feet high and it will even upload the video to YouTube for you to share. Cost is around $300. But this thing is so cool. It sets up its own wi-fi hotspot with your iPhone or iPad or Droid device on the Verizon wireless network.
I had a ball testing it out even though it kept running into drone-eating trees on my front lawn until I got the hang of it. But its lightweight and, once you get the hang of the iPad or iPhone controls, it flies like a dream.
The second camera I want to show you is called a trail cam.
It’s the RCX2 from on outfit called Leupold. Hang it on a tree or on a pole and it uses motion detecting and infra red technology to shoot anything the moves inside its 60 foot range…either video or 10 megapixel stills, in daylight or at night. I captured a bunch of deer and other hungry critters along a creek near my house.
You can use it to get candid shots of animals or even as a security camera. Cost is about $229.
Both of these cameras take great photos and videos and they’re just a lot of fun to use.

Great feature Mike…you just made me add two more toys to my already burgeoning list of “wants”. Maybe we’ll be flying drones together next summer!
