Customized news apps

The Internet, social media, smartphones and tablets have changed the way we get, process and share media. We can now customize and personalize our news with very powerful apps. Our PC Mike Wendland shows his two favorites.

Perhaps the most elegant personal information app I have ever used is Flipboard. That’s what it does, allowing me me to flip between the stories and social media posts most relevant to my interests. It’s like a constantly updated magazine, even grabbing Facebook and Twitter posts from my friends and giving me a daily briefing that I find myself reading several times a day. It’s free and works pretty much on all platforms.

But I also use this app…. Zite. It doesn’t gather social media posts as aggressively as Flipboard but I’ve found it better customizes the news I want by the categories I choose to follow. Zite seems newsier to me, gathering material from hundreds of different webpages and blogs and allowing me to dive deep into the things that interest me the most. It, too, is free and works on all major mobile devices.
