We call them smartphones because, well, that’s just what these tiny pocket size communications devices are… smart. But what makes them smart are apps – tiny little applications you download to your smartphone that give them powers scarcely imaginable just a few years ago.
Lately, I’ve been using a free app that effortlessly allows you to record and upload audio for your friends, family or the rest of the world to hear.
If you have a Droid or an iPhone, you need to see an awesome app called…. Audioboo.
Tap the icon, open the app, hit “Start” and… after the countdown… start talking and making your own “Boo.”
I use it to do a daily PC Mike podcast, sharing the latest tech news of the day. After recording my spiel, I hit pause, then upload it. I can even attach a picture to illustrate what I’m discussing.
But there are so many uses for this. Teachers can give assignments or tips to students, family members can keep in touch, church and civic groups can share info or… you can be an online talk show host or… invent your own way to Boo.
Besides smartphones, Audioboo also works through your PC or Mac computer. You can use its built in microphone to record messages… even upload or intersperse other audio clips into your recording. And everything can be shared with your Facebook friends, Twitter followers, embedded into a website or e-mailed.
The Audioboo website is filled with thousands of Boos you can tune into but making your own Boos is more fun than anyone should be allowed to have on a smartphone.
Again, all this is free. One of the coolest apps I’ve seen in a long time.
