I get asked a lot by people ready to move up from a mobile phone to a smartphone: Android or iPhone?
Here’s my short and simple answer.
First, understand that as different as Protestant to Catholic, or Democrat to Republican, is Google to Apple.
Those two brands are the gorillas of technology. It’s not Apple vs Microsoft anymore, or Google vs Yahoo! It’s Apple vs Goggle. That’s where the tech war will play out over the next two years and, more specifically, we’ll see it most clearly in their rival mobile operating systems – Google’s Android vs Apple’s iOS 5.
Google’s Android powers mobile phones and tablets, lots of different brands. Apple’s iOS 5 only powers iPads and iPhones.
And that should tell you something. You have a lot more choices with Android. There are dozens of different devices available. Not so much with Apple.
But iOS 5 has the clear edge in popularity, applications that are available and simplicity of use. That, in fact, is the main hallmark of Apple. It’s devices are really, really easy to use.
If you’ve been using an iPhone for a while and switch to a Droid, you feel like a fish out of water. There are more button pushes to get Droid to do what you want.
But the Droid is much more customizable. It’s openness to design means there already is and, thanks to the new Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade to the OS that was just released, will soon be many different ways to configure a phone or tablet to do just what you want it to do.
Apple devices are proprietary, a closed ecosystem if you will, You can moves things around on your screens a but simplicity of Apple’s strong point and that of necessity limits your ability to customize it. On the positive side, that means that everything works much the same on all of Apple’s iDevices and that translates to uniformity and reliability.
The Ice Cream Sandwich OS that Google has developed is going to be huge, but its going to take some time. Right now, it works on only the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, and that device is just about to come on the market. Others, will follow. In time.
For apps, Apple’s iTunes store is so far ahead of Android’s Market that there’s no comparison. Same with music and the built in iPod on the iPhone and iPad. Apple’s new iOS 5 iCloud over-the-air syncing service for music, apps, contacts and calendars bests the rather anemic over-the-air capabilities that have been part of Droid gizmos for a while.
And, of course, Apple has Siri, the voice controlled “personal assistant” that becomes a navigation feature and a great demo for friends at parties or around the water cooler. Android has a feature called Voice Actions that works quite well, though not as flashy as Siri.
Okay, this was supposed to be short.
Bottom line. Android or Apple?
For me, the choice is Apple.
But I’ve been using it since 2007 when I might have been the very first person in the nation to plunk down my money for it.
It is so ingrained in my tech-think that I don’t think I could unlearn it. Every time I test out a Droid, I feel disoriented and flummoxed.
For those upgrading to a smartphone with no prior experience, I’m inclined to suggest a Droid.
That’s because, given time, I think Google and Android and open source will win out over closed and proprietary.
Besides, I think the rivalry and competition keeps Apple sharp. And with Steve Jobs and his brilliant guiding hand gone from Apple, they need the motivating inspiration and drive that only comes from fierce competition.

Digital Trends – A new long-term study from Denmark’s Institute of Cancer Epidemiology examined the medical histories of more than 350,000 mobile phone users over a period of eighteen years. The study’s conclusion? Mobile phone users are at no greater risk for developing cancer in the brain or central nervous system than people who don’t use mobile phones. The study has been published in the British Medical Journal.

Digital Trends – Acer and ViewSonic are the latest companies to execute patent licensing agreements with Microsoft to protect their Android smartphones and tablet devices from litigation in the event Microsoft ever decides to take Google to court for patent infringement. Terms of the agreements were not disclosed, but ViewSonic will explicitly be paying royalties to Microsoft to cover Android tablets and mobile phones. The announcement of a license agreement with Acer contains no language about royalties, potentially indicating Acer may have executed a patent swap with Microsoft that doesn’t involve cash—or maybe Acer is just playing closer to its vest.
